Games Nights

My happiest memories of my Brother-in-law Mike are of family gatherings, at Mockett Drive or Low Bayles, usually with tables laden with food, drinks, games, debates and arguments! One such occasion about 30 years ago was at King Edward Avenue, Broadstairs when all of us were together for Easter. We had scoffed the turkey, had a glass or two of wine and the kids had played happily in the garden while the adults put the world to rights! Eventually that evening, as we downed the beer and barley wine (home-made in those days) and the room filled with cigarette smoke (everyone seemed to have a fag going at that time) we decided to play Monopoly. It soon turned into a serious game of high finance. As Mike got into difficulties he decided he wanted to form a "co-operative". My Husband (also Mike) challenged this and soon we had a heated debate going. The rule book was pored over and quoted and re-quoted. Sue's Mike said "the rule book doesn't say you can't form a co-operative...!" My Mike said "... it doesn't say you can either!" etc. etc. Finally Mike said "right, I'm not bloody playing!" and stormed out of the room, out of the house and into the front garden. When the shouting subsided and we stopped laughing Mike quickly cooled off and came in. Many, many more games, debates and lively evenings followed, of course. often ending with an improvised sing-song and always laughter. My lovely sister Sue and Mike were a unique and amazing team. It was never dull with Mike around - always fun. I miss him very much. Libby
